It’s winter – the weather is frigid, there are only a few hours of sunlight a day and the outdoor physical activity options can be limited.

If you’re looking for a way to improve your mood, try revamping your living space. There are simple steps you can take to breathe new life into your living space and make it feel a little warmer this winter.

Cozy it up
When the temperatures are so low outside you can’t even check your texts without getting a warning message on your phone, you need a warm place to retreat to. Make your living space as cozy as possible – whether the space is a bedroom, a condo or a multi-level house.

The first step is to add big, warm blankets and over-sized pillows that you can snuggle up with. Try different materials, textures, and styles to find what works best for you and your space. The goal is to create a space so cozy, you won’t want to leave. Winter isn’t so bad when you’re looking out from the comforts of your home, right?

Next, go beyond the tangible and seek out some warm and cozy scents. The smell of freshly baked cookies is always a hit, but if you aren’t a baker, you can recreate the smell with candles or air fresheners. These days, if you can imagine it, there’s a scented version of it. Whether you want warm apple pie, pine trees, bonfire or hot cocoa, you can likely find it in candle form.

Frame memories
Another way to cheer up your space is to evoke memories in the form of good ol’ fashioned printed photos. Print out pictures of your loved ones, vacations you’ve been on or some of your favourite hobbies. Having those pictures placed around your living space will make it easy to relive your memories at any time.

Let there be light
We don’t get a whole lot of natural light in the winter. Make the most of what you can get by opening your curtains when it’s sunny and soak up the rays from your indoor paradise.

To make up for the lack of daylight in the winter, try playing with indoor lighting. String lights are a great way to make a space feel dreamy and festive. Even just switching your usual overhead lights can feel like a big change in the winter months. Ditch the fluorescent lighting and opt for a warmer white or yellow instead.

Clean and tidy
We know decluttering isn’t the most fun, but it always feels good to get rid of the junk you have in the back of the closet. Channel your inner Marie Kondo – if something doesn’t bring you joy, toss it. While you’re at it, clean off that layer of dust you’ve been ignoring for the past month and give the floors a good sweep and mop. A proper seasonal cleaning doesn’t have to only happen in the spring!

Having a clean, organized living space is oh so satisfying and makes it that much easier to relax.
