Many of us are seeking creative ways to make the most of time away from work or school this March Break. While many of us crave a warm vacation, it may not be feasible and often doesn’t involve the movement you crave.
No need to rack your brain to come up with quality time plans. We’ve got some ideas that will help make this a March Break to remember. Here are six active ways to enjoy your time off.
Kickstart the season with a spring clean
Take an afternoon to declutter, reorganize, and clean around the house. All those dark winter hours may have left dust hiding in obscure places. Get someone to spot you while you climb (safely!), crouch, and stretch to dust the nooks and crannies of your house and freshen up your living space. With a little elbow grease, you may find a clean and organized home helps you feel more productive and calm.
Exer-game on!
Chances are, you or someone you know has access to a video game system. Gone are the days when video games were sedentary. As gaming evolves, developers are finding new and exciting ways to combine gaming with movement. You may even forget that you’re getting in a workout when you’re going for the gold against your family in interactive fitness or sports gaming. Some can even track your reaction times, body movements and overall progress. So…fire up the system and let’s get gaming!
Embark on a scavenger hunt
This one can be an indoor or outdoor activity. Make a list of rare, unusual and challenging items that can be found in your house or around your neighbourhood. Set time limits, get out a stopwatch and follow along while the others compete against each other to collect the most items from the list.
Get your groove on.
Create a high-energy playlist, invite some friends, and spend a night strutting your stuff in the living room. Make it competitive by appointing a dance judge to decide whose moves are the most footloose and fancy-free. It’s a great chance to boost your heart rate, bust some moves and connect with your friends and family members over a laugh.
Hop on the ski hill
If winter is still in the air, take advantage of the final days of snow. Grab a snowboard or a pair of skis and take a few runs on the hill before it winds up for the season. Not only is it a great cardio workout, but a good dose of fresh air can improve your mental health. You’ll leave feeling invigorated and ready for spring.
Visit your neighbourhood recreation centre
If cold isn’t your thing, round up the kids and simulate the summer ahead in a heated pool at a nearby recreation facility. Swimming is great exercise and keeps your heart rate up without putting stress on your joints. It also builds muscle and endurance.
Incorporating physical activity into time away from work and school is a fun and healthy way to stay connected with family and friends. Better yet, there are lots of inexpensive activities that can keep you moving and having fun as a family.
