Eating when not at home can be a challenge. Whether you're on the road for work, didn't have time to meal prep or on vacation, choosing something healthy and satisfying while still convenient can be a hard feat to accomplish. But don't fret too much, it's definitely manageable, especially if you keep these tips in mind:

Protein
No matter the program you’re on, protein is likely still on your plate and should also be on you at all times. Any source of protein will help keep you feeling full and energized no matter what you’re up to. The easiest to pack is a protein bar which you can keep in your bag or car, and can be a life-line when the hanger starts creeping in.

Travel friendly
While a protein bar can bounce around in the bottom of your gym bag until it’s needed, take the time to pack some foods that don’t require refrigeration. Reach for snacks that are healthy and filling and are ready to eat in as few steps as possible.

Eat out with a plan
Some tried and true tips for eating out are to sub in veggies for fries, get the salad dressing on the side and ask for a take home container before you get your food. Then, put half of the portion aside so you don’t feel that you have to clear the plate. If you can, do a quick search online to see what’s around so you start off on the right foot.

Drink up
Don’t leave home without your water bottle! Keep multiples around your house, car and office if you have to in order to ensure you’re always staying hydrated. Often we confuse thirst for hunger and overeat trying to alleviate the feeling. Drinking two cups of water has also been shown to help reduce the amount of food you eat.

Keep busy
Boredom is one of the main reasons we get snacky, plus, if you’re staying active it’s usually quite difficult to eat while doing something. That being said, if you can plan snacks to eat every 2 to 3 hours, this will keep you from reaching the “so hungry I could eat a day old hot dog” stage.

One and done
Part of travelling and going new places is getting to experience new cuisine, and you should! A great way to be smart about it is to pick one meal a day to indulge. Then stick to the plan for the other two. This way you have something extra to look forward to and you’ll likely enjoy your treat that much more.
