Teens get fit for free this summer

Did your teen leave an impression on your couch last summer?

Great news! They can make an even bigger impression on their health this summer!

For the months of July and August GoodLife Fitness is offering a free Teen Fitness Program from coast to coast, for youth between the ages of 12 and 17 years old.

Where: All GoodLife Fitness Clubs
When: Between 8am-4pm, 7 days a week for July and August 2011

Participating teens will have full club access with the following exceptions: tanning, pool, sauna, whirlpools, squash courts and Hot Yoga.

Listen to a message from Patch about Teen Fitness.

We’ve all heard the news: overweight and obese teenagers are tipping the scales at an alarming rate. According to the Canada Health Measure Survey (2010), over 26 percent of children and youth are overweight. Additionally, 60 percent of Canadian youth do not get the required daily physical activity for optimum growth and development. A whopping 93 percent of children and youth are not meeting Canada’s physical activity guidelines.

“At GoodLife, we are passionate about helping all Canadians become fit and healthy and we know the importance of starting healthy habits at a young age,” said David Patchell-Evans, GoodLife Founder & CEO. “We piloted the Teen Fitness Program in most of our clubs last summer.”

“In some communities across Canada, such as Ottawa, there was an extraordinary response where thousands of teens got on-board and enjoyed the positive benefits of fitness,” said Tracy Glennon, Director of Operations for GoodLife Fitness. “My own daughter Kate and her friends took part last year and had an amazing time trying new experiences such as Group Cycling classes and welcomed the great orientation the club teams gave them to strength training.  Teen Fitness gave us the opportunity to do something cool and fun together as a family.”

Registration is now open at www.goodlifefitness.com/teenfitness. Stay up to date on Teen Fitness and other great programs by following us on Twitter or Facebook.

Fantastic idea! I’m going to encourage my teen to join this summer.

  2. Nelson says:

I’m currently a GL member and think this is fantastic. However, does GL have a teen membership for outside of the summer? I want to visit in the evening and introduce my teen to regular gym participation however we can only attend in the evenings. Does one exist?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Nelson – it’s so great of you to be instilling such great values of fitness for your teen. We indeed do have youth memberships available. Simply ask at the front desk, and let them know what would work best for you and your teen – our Associates will be able to best advise.
Good luck and wishing you many happy workouts together!

  3. Brad says:

Great idea…. does the teen need to have a parent that’s a member or is it open to all teens. I am a member of GoodLife but am just inquiring for another teen. Thanks

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Brad – great question! Indeed, even when the parent isn’t a Member a teen can participate in the program. However, the parent will need to come in for the first club visit with the teen.
      Hope that helps!

  4. Marg says:

My daughter will be 12 in October. I am a member and she is desperate to join. Could she?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Marg,

This is a great question – thanks for asking.

Teens must be 12 years of age before starting the program, so unfortunately 2012 will be the first year your daughter is eligible.

Congrats to both of you – it’s wonderful that she’s so excited about beginning a fitness program. Luckily, at her age, she can get all the physical activity she needs just by being a kid and playing outside!

Looking forward to seeing her next year.

  5. Kathy says:

This is fantastic news. Will someone be on hand to instruct the teens on what to do and how to use the equipment?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Kathy,

All of the teens participating in the program will go through orientation where they will be shown what they can do at the club, how to use the equipment, and what areas of the club are unavailable to them (the pool, sauna, tanning beds).

Hope to see you and your teens this summer!

  6. Louise says:

As a parent of over weight children I was thrilled to be able to offer this to my child, being a low income family it wasn’t an option in the past for our family. My son participated in this program last year and he enjoyed it very much but it wasn’t as free as stated.

During our initial interview the staff member said that since my child had no experience in a fitness club, I was encouraged to sign him up with a personal trainer for six visits to train him on the use of the equipment and set him up with a program to meet his goals, because of course as a parent I wouldn’t want to see my child get hurt if he happen to use the equipment incorrectly.

As I sat with my 14 year old son who has entered puberty, just completed his first year of high school, over weight, who needs a boost of self esteem and is determined to making the most of this free fitness program. I started to juggle finances around in my mind and try to figure out how I’m not going to let my child down in his fragile teenage years.

I was disappointed when free meant to pay $240 to make sure my child didn’t hurt himself. I did manage to make it work and he did participate and he loved it immensely. Once his six personal trainer visits ended, he was found on his own and the enthusiasm to continue slowly dwindled. I was contacted by Goodlife to meet with them and setup a program for him to continue for a year. Well it turned out that the programs were hundreds of dollars to help my child. I couldn’t afford this and my child could no longer go.

    Free it was not.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Thank you for this feedback, Louise. I am glad that your son enjoyed his membership last summer and I hope that he gets involved again this summer. When it comes to the decision on personal training we do leave it up to each individual Member and their parent on what option works best and every situation is different. Personal Training is a great way for any Member to get started and have a personal introduction to the club. After the initial sessions are over many of our Members choose to continue with training for the extra motivation and help to work towards their own personal fitness goals. We know from experience that Members who work with a Personal Trainer tend to obtain better results in a shorter timeframe than on their own. For those Members who choose not to do Personal Training we do offer other options such as group orientations. These group sessions give an excellent overview of the rules and how to use our equipment. The Group Orientations include both the strength and cardio equipment and there are even some for our Group Exercise classes. These orientations are free for Members and available throughout the day. If Personal Training doesn’t work for your son this summer one of these orientations might be an option to get a refresher, and of course you’re more than welcome to attend with your son. As an added motivator we do recommend that your son invites a friend along for the workouts. That way he’ll have a workout buddy and they can help motivate each other.
Hopefully this helps, and we wish your son many successes with the program.
      Yours in health & fitness….

  7. Hi there,

As the Youth Coordinator for Boys and Girls Clubs of Hamilton I am wondering if you have posters that we can hang or flyers? This opportunity would be great for our families as many of them do not have the money to sign their teens up for an experience like this.

Please let me know at your earliest convenience,

Boys and Girls Clubs of Hamilton

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi! We can certainly look into how we can help. I’ve passed on your request to our Specialist on the program, and you can expect an email from her shortly.
      Thanks for reaching out!

      • Stephanie Morrison says:

I would love to have some posters/literature that I could post in the my school. I am a high school Physical Education teacher and think that this program sounds amazing!

        • GoodLife Fitness says:

          Hi Stephanie,

I am happy to hear your excitement for Teen Fitness! We are working on some posters and literature for schools, so once I have them available I will email some to you.

          Thank you,
          GoodLife Fitness

  8. Martine says:

Hi, Does this apply to Énergie Cardio centres in Quebec?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Martine – Energie Cardio will be running a similar program this summer that will be open to all 16 and 17 year olds.
      Hope this helps!

  9. Isabel says:

My daughter participated in this program last summer and loved it!! Would she be able to sign up for this offer again this summer?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Isabel – absolutely! If your daughter is between the ages of 12-17 during the time of the program, then she is more than welcome to participate.
Looking forward to hearing how she’s enjoying it!

  10. Brenda Palmer says:

Great that you encourage teens to get up off the couch, however I am looking for incentive for the university student (18+) who is off from May to Sept and looking to get into the gym after a day at work…what do you have for them?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Brenda, we have student term memberships available. These term memberships are specifically designed with students in mind as they suit the student calendar. Just ask one of our Associates at the club you’re interested in, and they’ll be able to provide you with all the detail.
      Happy workouts!

  11. John says:

I’d like to workout with my brother during these 2 months. He qualifies for the program (teenager), but I do not.

Do you have a 2 month membership available?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi John, we do indeed offer short term memberships. Your best bet would be to visit the club you’re most interested in and let them know of your situation. They’ll be able to help!
Wishing you and your brother happy workouts!

  12. Laurie says:

Excellent promotion. This is a great incentive for teens to establish what we hope will be a life long good fitness habits. It is a win win long term situation for the teen and for your business. Good marketing

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Thank you Laurie. We hope that we can help instill those fitness and healthy habits in our teens.
      Yours in health & fitness…

  13. Brett says:

You guys serious? I pay for a full membership and now will have to wait to use machines/weights since the gym will be crowded with kids…

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Brett – Thanks so much for submitting your concern. We do believe this program can help instill the values of fitness and health in teens so that they can continue being active past their teenage years, and grow into healthy and strong adults. If you’d prefer to workout outside the hours of the program, we invite you to take advantage of all other hours. The program is offered between 8am – 4pm during the months of July and August. If you find that your preferred time at the club becomes overly crowded, please feel free to contact us at social@goodlifefitness.com and we’ll do what we can to help.

      • Disappointed says:

This is really inconsiderate to paying members. I will move to another club.

        • GoodLife Fitness says:

          Hello Disappointed,

I am sorry to hear you feel that way. Only 7% of kids get enough activity per day to meet the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines. The Teen Fitness Program is, I think, a great way to help teens increase the amount of activity they get on a daily basis. Over on the GoodLife Kids Foundation blog Silken Laumann has an article talking about the importance of making sure our children receive enough exercise. I encourage you to read it.

If you have specific concerns about the program, I encourage you to speak with the General Manager of your club or to contact us at members@goodlifefitness.com.

          Yours in health & fitness,
          GoodLife Fitness

          • Scott M. says:

Why should your paying club members be forced to workout, outside of these hours, if they don’t want to be around kids? You’re taking advantage of those of us that pay for your club. Not fair.

          • Suzanne says:

I agree. People who have paid for their memberships shouldn’t have to make way for kids who aren’t. I have enough trouble getting on the machines I like anyway, and I’m certainly not thrilled about having to schedule around this. I’ll probably be switching gyms this summer…something with a wider range and more equipment, where there aren’t a bunch of kids. My husband is at VRC and their married memberships are cheaper anyway. Very disappointed, Good Life.

          • Brenda says:

I can’t believe all of the ignorant people on here who are complaining about there being too many kids in “their” gym. Grow up people and stop being so selfish! It’s only for 2 months, and only during the day. Go at night, or go exercise outside (it’s being offered in the summer after all, not the winter) during the day THEN go at night OR better yet, pretend that you’re an adult and support these kids.

  14. Rachelle says:

My oldest is 11… too bad. or is there anything for kids? We would definitely use it!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Rachelle,

Unfortunately the Teen Fitness Program is only available to teens between the ages of 12 to 17. Last year it was limited to 14-17, so we have expanded it this year.

If you are looking for fun activities to help get your kids active, I encourage you to check out the GoodLife Kids Foundation. They support a number of great organizations that help get kids active, plus they have some wonderful ideas on what you can do as a family to get fit together. Check them out at http://www.goodlifekids.com

  15. Tanzie says:

Hi i am currently 15 years old and i was wondering if you need a parent to be present for the first orientation? I am old enough and capable to be by myself. Also, im planning to bring my little brother(age 12) and sister(age 13) as well with me so, they can also exercise. Will they need parent supervision??

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Tanzie – for your first orientation, you will need to bring your parent in with you. This is to ensure that your parent is aware of the program and the club. You’re more than welcome to bring your brother and sister – it’s a great idea to work out as a family!
      Enjoy the workouts!

  16. Lucy says:

Hi I was wondering what’s the “Women’s Club”?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Lucy – we have GoodLife Fitness for Women clubs where all women can feel comfortable exercising. These clubs are open to all female Members.
Many of our co-ed locations also have for women sections where you can enjoy your exercise regime.
      Hope this helps!
      Yours in health & fitness…

  17. Scott says:

We who pay full membership should have priority for any equipment use, rather than this extended youth promotion, which could be set for 1:00 to 4:00 etc…

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Scott,

Our experience last year was very positive. All of the teens that participated were very respectful of the clubs rules and regulations. Also, because our clubs tend to have lower attendance in the summertime (people like to enjoy outdoor activity) it is an ideal time to invite teens into the club. We do limit their time to 8am to 4pm, which is outside of our peak times (before and after work).

If you do find problems with equipment availability because of the Teen Fitness Program, please let us know. We do appreciate the feedback.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Scott – Thank you so much for submitting your concern. We do believe this program can help instill the values of fitness and health in teens so that they can continue being active past their teenage years, and grow into healthy and strong adults. 18. Tammy heath says:

my daughter would love to take advantage of this offer! However, I don’t think there is one in Sussex, nb. if there is please let me know

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Tammy, currently we don’t have a location in Sussex. If that changes, we’ll certainly let you know. However, the closest location seems to be our Quispamsis, if you’re in the area with your daughter.
If you’d like to know our current club locations, please visit: http://goodlifefitness.com/FindAClub.aspx
      Yours in health & fitness…

  19. Lisa MacInnis says:

Is this available at every Goodlife Fitness? I am wondering , in particular, the one in my own community here in Quispamsis, New Brunswick.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Lisa,

It is available at all of our GoodLife Fitness clubs, including the one in Quispamsis. Hope to see you and your teens this summer!

      • Lisa MacInnis says:

Awesome, the Quispamsis club did not participate last year so I am glad to hear that all clubs are involved this year. Great job Goodlife!!

  20. elizabeth says:

This is a great idea and initially I was going to forward the news on to friends then I re-read and reconsidered.
I think your headline “Did your teen leave an impression on your couch last summer?” sounds quite rude and I don’t want to offend anyone especially if they have an overweight child or if they themselves are overweight. They may think I am making a judgement, not just offering them a great option.
We will never encourage the larger people to use fitness centres as long as we are judging them on there weight, and so the cirlce goes.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Elizabeth – we’re so sorry if the line had offended you. Our intention was to convey the question of ‘had your teen spent most of their summer on the couch – hence leaving an impression?’. By no means do we promote ‘skinny’ = ‘healthy’, in fact, if you take a look around our clubs, you’ll notice there are people of all shapes and sizes, all working toward their personal fitness goals. Our intention of this program is to get teens active so that the values of leading a healthy and active lifestyle stay with them as they transition into adulthood.
Hopefully this clarifies some misconceptions, and we hope that it doesn’t deter you from sharing the news of a healthy lifestyle with your friends.
      Yours in health & fitness…

  21. michelle APTER says:

if my daughter is already 17years old in March/11 ,is she eligible for the free July and Aug 8-4Pm? She had a membership years ago.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Michelle – as long as your daughter is still 17 years of age when she starts the program, she is fine to participate.
      Yours in health & fitness…

  22. Christina says:

Hey I’m a 15 year old and am really excited about this free summer program, but I’m also looking for something more long-term. Does Goodlife Fitness offer full-year memberships to people my age??

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Christina, it’s so great to hear that you’re making the healthy choice of living an active life. There are a few options that we currently have at the club for teens. Just ask one of our Associates at the club, and let them know what you’re looking for so that they can help you meet your needs!
Let us know how your first workout goes!

      • Christina says:

also, I was wondering if we need to come with our parents each time we use the club facilities for the teen summer program?

        • GoodLife Fitness says:

          Hi Christina,

After your orientation, your parents do not need to be present when you use the club. See you in July!

  23. Renee says:

Hi ! I am a 17 years old girl. But I have no experience in any of the fitness clubs nor I am an athlete . So basically I am not a fan of any sports . Also, none of my parents have membership for GL . I really want to get fit . Can I still join or do I need to prepare anything for it ? and is there going to be an instructor who follows the teen through out the program or they will let the teens to participate freely in the area they are allow to after the instruction of the equipments ? thank you

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Renee – If you are still 17 years of age at the start of the Teen Fitness program, then we invite you to participate. And don’t worry if you’re not an athlete, people of all sorts of backgrounds – whether athlete or not – visit our clubs. What’s most important is that you recognize the need for activity in your life! Also, when you begin the Teen Fitness program, you’ll be receiving an orientation that will introduce you to the club and things you can do at the club. You may choose our Group EXercise classes if you’d like to workout with an instructor, or if you’d like to do your own thing at the club, there are always Associates around to ask any questions you may have, whether about equipment or otherwise. So have fun, stay active, and don’t forget to bring your parents in on the first day!

  24. Laura says:

Fantastic idea! I’m looking forward to using your club during the summer. I have a couple of questions:
    1. Will I need to register with a specific club or may I use multiple locations?
    2. Will I be able to attend your group exercise classes?
    Thanks for this great opportunity!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Laura – for your registration, you will need to register with a specific club, and that will be the first club you’ll visit. However, after your first time, you’re welcome to use multiple locations. As for Group EXercise classes – absolutely! It’s a great way to get involved in a group as well as get a workout with the instructor.
      Enjoy!

  25. Tanzie says:

hi im wondering if teens are allow to participate in group exercises? I am interested in yoga and pilates

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Tanzie, you’re welcome to participate in our complimentary Group EXercise classes. If you have any other questions, just let us, or our club Associates know.
      Enjoy!

  26. Emily says:

Hi, I’m joining good life fitness for teens this summer. Registration is on June 1st right? My brother turns 12 on june 8th and he wants to join, can he?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Emily,

Registration begins June 1st, but the program does not start until July 1st. So your brother is OK to join since he will turn 12 before he can start working out.

  27. John says:

I have 2 boys, 12 and 17 and are already members with GL, do their membership fees stop for the 2 months? How does that work with members that are in that age bracket? Thanks.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi John,

When you sign up your two boys for the Teen Fitness Program, we will put a hold on their membership for July and August so they won’t pay any membership fees. This applies to any of our Members who are 12 to 17 — as long as they register for the program, we’ll put their membership on hold.

  28. kerryann says:

my daughter wants to do it but we dont know how and when and her friend is 11 and she wants to do it too but she doesnt turn 12 till auguest 30 can there be any exceptions

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Kerryann,
It’s so great to hear about your daughter’s enthusiasm for pursuing fitness and activity. She’ll be able to register online (more details to come) this June on our website. And for her first day, we ask that you (as her parent) visit the club with your daughter.

Unfortunately, the program is for 12 to 17 year olds. However, once her friend turns 12 in August she’s most welcome to join. We’re sure your daughter will meet lots of new friends at the club. We wish you and your daughter happy fitness!

  29. Susan Topper says:

As I recall from last year, there is a registration fee that must be paid aside from the optional 6 personal training session fees. How much is that?

  30. Rebecca says:

I’m actually really frustrated with GoodLife. You offer this program for teens which is great, but there are absolutely no programs offered for university students. Because of this, I have no choice but to switch to Extreme Fitness where they offer a program I can actually afford. You should offer some kind of program for students who are only home for four months, but can’t afford the 400$ you are demanding we pay.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Rebecca,

I apologize for causing any frustration, but the Teen Fitness Program is only available to 12 to 17 year olds. However, we do offer prepaid student membership packages for the summer which I encourage you to ask your local club about.

  31. Janet says:

Is any of the gyms in Dartmouth Nova Scotia offering the Teen Fitness Program?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Janet,

All of our gyms in Nova Scotia (and across Canada) are offering the Teen Fitness Program this year. See you in July!

  32. Aruan says:

Hi, im a teen interested in this program, will there be a fee ?
and will it be EVERY gym, being as i live in a small town i wasnt sure if this applied to mine .

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Aruan,

There is no fee for the Teen Fitness Program. And it is every GoodLife Fitness gym across Canada. Hope this helps!

  33. Irene Callaghan says:

What about teens who already pay for a monthly membership. Can they have these months free?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Irene,

Teens who currently have a monthly membership and want to sign up for the Teen Fitness Program will have their existing membership put on hold for those 2 months, so they won’t be charged.

  34. leah blenkhorn says:

    Hi
    what a wonderful idea!
is this program open to adults with disabilities….
i would be coming in with them one is 26 the other 46
they have been to the gym and would love to continue
    leah

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Leah – what wonderful feedback. Currently, this program is available for only teens aged 12- 17, however, we’ll certainly be passing on your feedback.
      Yours in health & fitness…

  35. Beth Rogers says:

Hello, my daugher already has a membership…will she be able to put a hold on it to take advantage of this free membership…it really isnt fair for paying teen members to see their friends attending for free. My daughter works a part time job in order to pay for her membership….lookin forward to hearing how you will handle this

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Beth – absolutely, your daughter will be able to put her membership on hold throughout the July and August months, no questions asked.
It sounds like she’s already making health and fitness a priority in her life, for which she should be congratulated… We wish her many wonderful summer workouts with her friends.

  36. Sadie says:

bah! Sounds brilliant, Ive already lost 10 pounds, by portioning my meals, but now I can become more active and fit. Lol, tired of going up one flight of stairs and getting out of breath!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Congratulations Sadie for making health and fitness a priority in your life! Way to go!!

  37. Jennifer Winchester says:

My son is 10 years old and would benifit from working out at the gym. Why are there no programs for children his age..I’d be willing to pay for it? He is mature enough to handle it in my opinion.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hello Jennifer, for children under the age of 12 we do offer our JUMP! programming which includes fitness based activities. We’re thrilled to hear that you’re interested in getting your son involved in fitness. Check out your nearest club to see what kind of offers are available for JUMP! programming and whether that’s something that would be of interest to you.
      In health & fitness…

  38. Lisa Nutbrown says:

I LOVE this idea! I have two kids that are between the ages of 12 and 17. Can both join, or is there a limit per family? I am a GoodLife member and think it would be fantastic to bring my sons with me to the gym. :-)

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Lisa, absolutely both your sons can join the program! Wishing you all happy workouts as a family.

  39. Andrea says:

Great program and glad to see the age has been dropped. One suggestion – would be much better if the age was 12 at Dec 31/11 – like at school, sports or many other programs offered out there. By having it 12 at the beginning of the program (July 1/11), you’re cutting that age group in half and many kids who have friends/classmates/teammates participating will lose out because they were born in the “wrong half of the year”.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Andrea – great feedback. We’ll be passing that on to the program organizers. Thanks!

  40. Leanne Schumacher says:

Question…my daughter age 13 is very interested but would be more comfortable if she is able to bring a friend with her who is also 13…would this be posible or is it for members teens only?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hello Leanne – any teen between the ages of 12 and 17 during the months of July and August is welcome to participate in this free program. They do not need to be a Member and neither do their parents in order to participate. Please let your daughter know she’s more than welcome to come in with her friend.
      In health & fitness…

  41. sharon gallinger says:

I am so thrilled to hear about this programme – I will be able to include my daughters now when I come to the gym instead of leaving them at home in front of the computer. Being a member at Good Life has been a life changing experience for me, and I will now be able to pass it on – thanks!

  42. Melissa Trenbirth says:

After the initial orientation, do teens need a parent with them on a regular basis while they work out?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Melissa,

Your parent/guardian only needs to come with you for your orientation. After that, you can work out on your own.

  43. Jane says:

What basic equipment do you have in your gym?

  44. Jackie says:

Yes free teen fitness all summer long is back! And there’s Hot Yoga!

  45. Mona says:

Can a parent still attend daily with their child?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Mona,

After the initial orientation, parents can attend with their teen daily if they are an active GoodLife Fitness Member.

  46. Anne says:

    Hi,
Do the clubs listed as women only, participate in the teens free program?
    Thanks for your time.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Anne,

Our Women’s Only clubs are participating in the Teen Fitness program as well. Only our female teens will be able to visit those clubs. Hope this helps!

  47. ashley says:

    Hi,
I live in quebec and was wondering if this program was offered at energie cardio aswell? would it still be free?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Ashley, Energie Cardio will be running a program this summer for 16 and 17 year olds. Your best bet to find out more details is to give your club a call! Happy workouts!

  48. Madison says:

    Hi,
    I can a couple questions,

1.) If your 12-17 do you have to register or are you able to just show up during the two months to work out?

2.) is the a limit to how many teens can register per location?

3.) do you have to go everyday or could you only go a couple days a week?

    Thanks!

  49. Madison says:

Oh and is this Offer available at the women club locations or only at the co ed locations?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      HI Madison,
Anyone who is 12 – 17 has to register through our website starting on June 1, 2011. There is no limit to the number of teens who can register. You can use the club any day of the week between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as many times as you want.

This offer is available at all of our locations – Women’s Only as well as Coed.

  50. Leigh says:

Do we have to leave the gym at four or is that last check in time of the day?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Leigh,

The last check in time is 3:00pm so you will have plenty of time to finish up your work out.

  51. Angela Pitman says:

This is a wonderful idea! As a parent I’m very reluctant to pay for a membership for my teen and then have her decide she doesn’t like it or value it for the money. This allows her to try it out and I’m thrilled that it will not cost me any money! Thanks GL.
    Angela

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Angela,

We are very excited about being able to make our clubs available in this way again this year. It really is a great way for teens to see and experience what it’s all about, and that fitness really is for everyone.

Thanks for your kind words – they are greatly appreciated

  52. Vanessa says:

    Hi!
When it says, “with the following exceptions: tanning, pool, sauna, whirlpools, and Hot Yoga,” does that mean this it is included or is not?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Vanessa,

It means that tanning, pool, sauna, whirlpools, squash courts and Hot Yoga are off limits for teens. Hope this clears up any confusion.

  53. David says:

Terrific Scam. I signed up for this last year, when I was 17. The idiot made me sign a contract even though I was not of legal age, and then at the end of the summer, after my “free” membership was over, I was furious to find out I wasnt allowed to leave until paying a $100 cancellation fee. If you sign up for this, they will try to pressure you into not reading the contract “Oh its just a formality blah blah blah”. Dont listen to them, make sure your read the entire thing top to bottom.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi David,
We are so sorry to hear about your experience. The situation that you describe below should not have happened and we would like the opportunity to look into your situation, if you are okay with that.

Since last year was our first year offering the Teen Fitness Program, we learned a lot about the program and how to make it even better this year. It is a completely free program and teens should feel welcome to utilize our clubs for July and August at no cost. After filling out a quick on-line registration form, teens need to come into the club with a parent or guardian to complete their registration where they fill out a special agreement, not a contract.

This program is meant to be really positive for teens to help them get active or continue their active lifestyles and have a chance to experience a great fitness club environment.

We would really like to look into your situation. If you are okay with that, please send us an email at social@goodlifefitness.com.

  54. Chompy says:

    Hello GL,

I’m 14 and I’m interested in taking part in this program. I am a black belt in karate, but I feel I need a change in my work out regime. martial arts are still important to me and are my comfort zone…what do you offer in the way of kickboxing, jiu jitsu or yoga classes in this summer program?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Chompy,
We offer BODYCOMBAT, which incorporates kickboxing and jiu jitsu. As well, some of our clubs offer yoga classes and our BODYFLOW class does incorporate elements of yoga.
These would be a good way to change things up a bit in your routine, and take advantage of Teen Fitness at the same time.

  55. Tommy P says:

Man, I signed up for this last year and only went 7-8 times the whole summer. Had the chance to improve myself, however I didn’t care much about my fitness. I realize that I could have been much stronger and bigger if only I would have been committed to this great opportunity. This year’s going to be different. I’m going to commit to going as many times as possible to the Goodlife gym near me and work my butt off. I would like to thank you for having this opportunity again this summer.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Tommy,

Thanks for participating again this summer. Sometimes it helps to have someone motivating you to get to the gym. Ask some of your friends to be your workout buddies. Have a great summer!

  56. Cindy says:

Hi I am 17 and I am interested on participating on this program. I also want to bring my sister (14). Do we still need to bring a parent on the first day/orientation?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Cindy! I am glad you are making your sister tag along with you.

You will need to bring your parent/guardian with you when you go into the club for the first time to complete your registration. We encourage you to bring them with you for your orientation as well, but it’s not required.

  57. Maureen says:

my parent isn’t able to attend the orientation, but my friend’s parent is. is that okay for me?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Maureen,
As long as your parent has come in with you to complete your registration, the orientation can be completed with or without them being present. We encourage having parents attend the orientatin sessions, but it is not required. In this case, the parent of a friend would be welcome to attend with you.
We hope you enjoy the program and have a great summer.

  58. libi says:

Really Lame! If I wanted to workout with teenage kids I would join a community center. Thank goodness my membership dues are up soon I will head to Gold’s to workout with adults. Best of luck with the daily teen child minding. What a dumb idea!

  59. maggie says:

hi i really excited to sign up for the program but from reading one of the comment ,i need to bring one of my parent to the first visit. is it ok if i dont because im probably coming in the noon or 2pm ish time and my parents wont be able to come with me during those time . is it ok if i come with a friend that is also signing up for it . and it free so no paying or anything?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Maggie,
You do have to bring a parent or guardian with you for your first visit. You can bring them in outside of the 8am to 4pm window if timing is an issue for you. But for legal reasons they have to accompany you for your first visit.

  60. Ryan says:

can someone direct me to where i should register. i cont find it on the site?

  61. Tyler says:

Hi, its june 1st, and it says i can start registraion online, but i cant seem to find where to do that?

  62. Marie says:

Both my girls were members at your gym this past winter but I ended up having to put their memberships on hold as suggested by our family doctor. Being in high school, with school work and part time jobs, their lives became too stressful for them. With clearance from our doctor and the removal of school from the stress equation, would they be able to participate in this fantastic program this summer?

    Thanks!

  63. Janet says:

I can’t find the link to sign my teen up … help

  64. Karen says:

I have been all over the website but do not see any place to register. Do we need to go to an area club to do this? Also, is this a time sensitive registration? in other words is there a limit to the number of teens who can register? I would hate for my daughter to miss a great opportunity.

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Karen,
The registration form will be up at http://www.goodlifefitness.com/teenfitness this afternoon. We are just running a few final tests. It’s not a time sensitive registration, and there’s no limit to the number of teens who can register. Registration will run until the program ends on August 31st, although it obviously makes more sense to register before it starts on July 2nd.

  65. Samantha says:

Hey, I am a teen willing to join the Teen Fitness program. Last year, my friend and I joined and there were forms and everything to be signed. But for some reason, I am looking on your site and I can’t seem to find any forms to be signed. Do I have to go to Goodlife and fill out forms there or are the forms going to be posted on the website soon? Please let me know, I’d like to join as soon as possible.
    Thank you. :)

  66. Jim says:

can’t find the link to register, please help.

  67. Lucy says:

I’ve just signed up today and I have some q’s.
    1) what is the initial visit for?
    2) also, when can we go for the initial visit? Should we go before July 2?
    3) Are we limited to the club we selected when we registered, or can we drop in at any club with our membership cards?
    Thanks!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Lucy,
The initial visit is to complete the membership agreement with you and your parent/guardian’s signatures.

You can go for your initial visit before July 2nd. We do prefer you go to the club you selected when you registered for your initial visit. After that, you can use any of our clubs in your area.

  68. Chantel says:

i have been looking for something like this for me! im 13 years old and i really want to get in good shape for this summer! totally gonna convince my parents to let me join!

  69. Diana says:

I was wondering if we could visit more than one location after receiving the pass or are we limited to one location?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Diana,
You do not have to visit only the club you signed up at. Your Teen Fitness registration will allow you to work out at any of our clubs, but your initial visit has to be at the club you chose during registration.

  70. Coomal says:

    Hi,
So since it’s an all womens club, I’m assuming that at the teen summer program there will only be girls right ?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Coomal,
Our women’s only clubs are obviously limited only to women, and this is true for the Teen Fitness Program as well.

  71. Rose says:

I really think that this is a wonderful idea as well as building a personal interest in fitness . I also like the fact of getting teens motivated is great

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Rose,
Thanks for your positive feedback. We are looking forward to introducing teens to the many benefits of fitness, and appreciate you taking the time to give us your thoughts.

  72. matthew says:

where do I get my membership?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Matthew,
You can register for the Teen Fitness program at https://goodlifefitness.com/TeenFitness/Registration.aspx by completing the form. Once you complete the form you will be sent your membership details and what you’ll need to do to complete the registration at the club, and when to pick up your membership card. If you have any further questions, please let us know.

  73. KC says:

I was extremely excited when i heard about this program, I have a teenage daughter who plays serveral sports, ranging from soccer, basketball swimming. Is there someone who can help her figure out which machines and excersizes are best for these sports?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi KC,
There’s two options for your daughter. She can participate in our free orientations (free weight, cardio, stretching, and 20 minute fit fix) which will give her an introduction to working out. She can ask the person giving the orientation for some tips for sports training.

Alternately, she can consider working with a Personal Trainer to train specifically for a sport. This would not be free, but is more effective. Hope this helps!

  74. Brett says:

This is a slap in the face to the loyal members who have paid all these years. I should not be made to workout “outside” these hours (1-4) just so kids can fool around in there. Nor should i have to wait during the times I am there and kids are using equipment.

Also, there is no justifiable response as I have read the other ones above. In the end Goodlife is a company seeking a profit and this is a smart way to get these kids to join the gym permanently, I am overly confident that Goodlife does not for a second care if kids get healthy.

Aside from this I’d like to add that i believe everyone should work out and get healty, kids especailly in todays society. But atleast get them to contribute something nominal albeit even $5-10 that all parents should be able to afford, so these monies can return to the gym for better facilities and equipment.

  75. CJH says:

    Hi !
I’m just about to join the free teen summer fitness program!
But before I actually join, i just have 2 questions ..
When I join, will there be enough equipment for everyone to use or will we have to wait for other people to finish with their exercize?
and also, when and where is the orientation at?
please reply ASAP thank you soo much Good Life!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi CJH,
Our clubs feature a wide variety of machines and cardio equipment, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding available equipment. During busy times you may have to wait a few moments for a popular machine.
There are orientation classes happening all of the time. When you go into the club to complete your registration you will choose a time for your orientation. The orientation will be at the club you choose for your first visit.
Hope to see you this summer!

      • CJH says:

        I’m just wondering..
when you go to this orientation, will I be able to choose what I want to do? Or will the people working at Goodlife force me to get an instructor to help me out? I run on the treadmill at home, does that count as an experience? I really do not wish to pay someone.. but if I don’t know how to use any other equipment other than the threadmill will I have to pay for an instructor?

        • GoodLife Fitness says:

          Hi CJH,
The orientation is just to introduce you to the club, the equipment, and the rules of the program. You are not going to have to work with an instructor or pay for anyone. After the orientation, you are welcome to work out at the club any way you like (treadmills, group exercise classes, etc.). I hope this helps clarify things.

  76. Michelle says:

So this program is 100% free? Is there a catch? Do we have to sign up for a year membership afterward or something?

  77. EVE says:

I’m 16 and i’m so exicited to join this summer but i have a question, do i really need a parent to come to the first visit can i just bring my student ID card and register?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Eve – Great to hear that you’re excited for the Teen Fitness Program this summer! For your first visit, you do indeed need your parent with you, however, once your first visit is complete, you can workout on your own schedule.
      Happy workouts!

  78. ME says:

I read a lot of instructions and i had a few questions before joining that we’re not allow to wear tank tops like are you guys talking about those thick ones and i know spagetthi tanks are not allowed but are we allowed to wear those thick ones. i also read we’re not allow to participate for 2 hours not longer? and are we allowed to use our Cell phone in the change rooms, what if we need to call someone? and do we have to register online?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi ME,
The following are the answers to all your questions:
      - tank tops are not permitted, your top must have sleeves (t-shirts are perfect)
      - there is a 2hour per day limit for teen workouts
      - cell phones are not permitted in the change rooms. If you need to call someone, you may use the front of the club area to make any calls
      - you will need to register online
for more information, please visit: https://goodlifefitness.com/TeenFitness/Rules.aspx.
      Happy workouts!

  79. Taylor says:

i’m going to try this this summer but i was wondering if orentation was manditory and what it would include.

  80. Crystal says:

does this offer apply to “fit for life” sites?

  81. Enisa says:

Hi, since the free teen fitness program ends on August 31st, 2011, will i have to buy a new membership in order to continue to work out at goodlife?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Enisa, after the program ends, if you’re interested in continuing to workout at the club, you will need to purchase a membership at the club.

  82. Nicole says:

I have already registered for the program, but I would now like to switch the location of the goodlife center to a different one. Can I do this?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Nicole, your first visit to the club will need to be the location you selected. However, after that, you’re welcome to visit any of our locations.

  83. Brian says:

I was wondering, im 17 years old so that meaning it is free for the whole summer? Does this include the additional tanning, massage, pool or just the gym. Thanks!

  84. Tyler says:

When does sign up end and are we free to work out on our own without having to attend any group workouts or anything

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Tyler,
Opportunity to sign up for the program will end with the program ending. If you’re between the ages of 12-17 you will be able to take advantage of the program until August 31st. Once you complete your orientation, you are able to workout according to your own schedule.

  85. Rose Stern says:

Very disappointed that in Quebec we get screwed again. In Ontario and other provinces it’s 12-17 but not here. My 14 year old son can’t go.

Why do Quebec companies always offer less than other provinces?

  86. Daniel says:

I think this is a great idea and I want to start ASAP, accept my parents keeps saying that its not really free and that you’ll get charged after..Is this true?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Daniel,
The Teen Fitness Program is completely free — we do not require any payment information from you or your parents at all. Hope this helps you get their approval!

  87. Elle says:

Can my parent and I come in for the first visit at any time? How long will we have to be there? Can I start working out right after the first visit with my parent? Also, can I come in at the same time as my friend and her parent?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Elle,
You and your parent can go in at any time to finish the registration, although we encourage you to call ahead to make sure someone is available to sit down with you. We prefer you go through the orientation first before working out, so I would try to schedule your first visit in conjunction with an orientation. You can come in the same time as your friend and her parent — we definitely encourage working out with friends. But you also have to bring your own parent or guardian with you.

  88. Iryna says:

Hi :) I just registered online and am VERY happy to soon be able to go to Goodlife, but I have two questions.

My friends and I are registered at different gyms but we want to work out together… can we all meet at one gym or do I have to stick with the one I registered with???

Also, can the parent who registered with you come regularly with you or do they have to pay after the first visit?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Iryna,
Your first visit to the club has to be at the one you chose, but after that you are free to workout at any of the clubs available to you, so no worries about meeting up with your friends.
As for your parent, after the first visit to finish registering with you, they would have to become a Member or purchase a day pass to workout with you.
      See you at the club!

  89. Katrina says:

Wondering if the group ex classes are also free for registered teens?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Katrina,
Indeed, Group EXercise classes are included in the Teen Fitness program. We do encourage you to be mindful of existing members participating in the Group EX classes.
      Happy workouts!

  90. Sara j says:

i just wanted to know if the gym is mixed with boys and girls or if girls play seperately then boys

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Sara,
We have clubs that are women’s only or have women’s only sections. We also have co-ed clubs and areas of clubs. When you register and you are choosing a club, it will say in the name of the club whether it is co-ed or women’s only.

  91. kaitlyn says:

if your parent signs the paper that you fill out online can you go without them because i want to go but my parents cant go between 8-4

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Kaitlyn,
You can complete registration with your parent or guardian outside of the 8 to 4pm hours, that’s not a problem.

  92. kaitlyn says:

what if your parent cant go can they call and talk to someone about the gym and they can sign the paper

  93. joane says:

hi i am very excited about the free gym but does a parent have to come to the first visit cant they call or something and sign the paper i really want to come but my parents wont come with me they said they would talk to you on the phone are they aloud to do that

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Joane,
Because you are a minor, a parent or guardian does have to come in with you for your first visit to complete the paper work to register you for the program, and to verify your age and identity.

  94. kaitlyn says:

if your parent cant make it can the person for emergency contact come in with you

  95. Bob says:

    Hey
It says we must bring our parents on our first visit when we register.
Do we have to register in between 8am-4pm, or can we come in to register after that?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Bob,
Your parents can come in with you to register outside of the 8-4 hours but you won’t be able to work out at that time. You’ll have to return another day between 8-4 to work out after registering.

  96. Laura says:

Hi, I wanted to start by saying thank you! I think this is a fantastic idea and I can’t wait to start working out this summer! It’s going to give me something to do :)
I was wondering if you had to pay for the orientation… also, could you give me a run-through of what will happen from the time me and my parents go to register until I can work out? Can I start working out after my orientation? Do my parents have to come for my orientation? How long will the orientation take?

    Thanks in advance!
Great program! Please continue this for years to come!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Laura,
You do not have to pay for anything with the Teen Fitness program. Your parents will have to come in with you to complete the registration. At this time, you’ll book an orientation that your parents don’t need to be present for. Once you have completed your orientation, you’re welcome to work out on your own.

  97. Dannie says:

Hi ! I just applied for the teen fitness program, does my mom have to take the tour with me ? Because she’s very busy, but is willing to show the proof of my age during my first visit. And i can’t print out the membership form, but put it on a USB stick, is that okay ?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Dannie,
Your mom needs to be present for the registration but will not need to take part in the orientation with you. You’ll need to print your completed registration form, though, the USB stick won’t work in club.

  98. Jamie says:

Hi!! I want to join the Teen Fitness Program but I am still 11. I am born in 1999 October so can I still join the program if I turn 12 this year?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Jamie,
Since the program ends on August 31st, 2011 and you do not turn 12 until October, you will have to wait until next year’s program unfortunately.

  99. Felicia says:

Hi, I’m a teenager who registered about a week ago for the Teen Fitness program. My first orientation is booked today (July 19). What am I supposed to bring to the orientation other than my ID and what do I have to wear? Furthermore, is there a 2nd/3rd.. orientation that I would have to go to afterwards? Or can I just start right away working out after the first orientation, after I get my membership card? Thanks for the help!

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Felicia,
There’s just one orientation you have to go to — but we do offer more if you are interested. We also have orientation Group EXercise classes. For your orientation, just bring some comfortable clothes to workout in, your ID, and a water bottle. Have fun at your orientation!

  100. em says:

let’s say my closest gym is at st-laurent and i did my oriantation over there and i got my card am i allowed to go to the gym somewhere else or i have to workout at the st-laurent gym?

  101. sara says:

i registered earlier but i wasnt able to come so is it still okay to still come to the club at august 1 or is it to late and can i come with my printed memebership thanks

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

      Hi Sara,
If you’ve registered online but not in club, you’ll need to come to the club with your parent and your printed membership. The club staff can then complete the registration, book your orientation, and you’ll be able to work out!

  102. e says:

are we going to get a free bag or we have to pay for it?

  103. e says:

i just wanted to know if we get a goodlife bag for free?

  104. Ali says:

Question- Do we have to work out in a group all the time or are we allowed to work out by ourselves?

    • GoodLife Fitness says:

Hi Ali! You are more than welcome to work out on your own.

      • e says:

        you never answer my question!!!!

      Hi Adem,
You are welcome to continue working out at a GoodLife club after the free Teen Fitness program is complete. Please come into the club with your parents and one of the staff members there will be able to discuss the cost with you and them.

  106. The Teen Fitness Program is such a superb initiative. All to often only the children who excel at sports participate in physical activity. Physical activity should be encouraged in all children, especially those who do not do sport. Childhood obesity is a ticking timebomb which will have far reaching consequences.

This summer I did the teen fitness at good life and it was great. I got fit and ready for thr new school year. Then, it ended and me along with many others have gained it all back. With the stress of school I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about my weight because the gym was a great place to go, now that summer is over I can’t even buy a membership here?! Thanks a lot!

      Hello,
The minimum age to work out at our clubs is 12 years old, so if you were old enough to do Teen Fitness you are old enough to have a regular membership. However, you will have to bring a parent/guardian in with you to fill out paperwork on your behalf.

      Yours in health,
      GoodLife Fitness
