Behind Teen Fitness: Family fitness

I know from personal experience it can be really hard to get up off that big comfy couch in the living room. Sitting there as a family spending time together watching the television, what a great way to spend your night together, right? Well I think we can all say that there are better ways to spend some quality time together.

I live in a household with two parents who put in full days of work and usually when they get home the couch is the first place they go to relax. Well, I have taken it into my own hands to change the habit they started. I let them know that when they need to unwind after a long day why not go outside for some fresh air and spend some time together.

I’m thankful that we live close to nature trails so a few times a week we make an effort to take the dog for a walk through the trails for a couple hours. Not only do we get a good cardio workout going up and down hills all day but we also spend the entire time talking. After all, nothing’s more boring than going on a walk without talking. For those who don’t have the opportunity I have to live within walking distance of some trails, you might consider going for a walk across town or to a local park.

My parents aren’t exactly the running type so that method works out great for everyone and at the end of the day you don’t feel guilty sitting down to watch your favourite shows. I enjoy having the time to talk to my folks and sort through the challenges of the day so, it’s a win win for everyone.

My adventure for next week is to take them out camping and get some canoeing and kayaking in before the cold weather starts to roll in. There are always options to keep active you just need to have a little creativity! Always keep in mind, when you make it fun it isn’t work.
