In my last post, I mentioned that I had just bought a house. One of the benefits that came with this was having a fenced in backyard for my dog to run around in. While this has given her the chance to be more active, I, in turn, have become lazy.
After years of apartment living and having to actually walk my dog each time she had to go outside, the convenience of having a backyard has been hard to ignore. Previously, mornings and evenings would consist of putting her on her leash and walking her around the block. Since she is a high energy dog (anyone who knows our Sophie would consider this an understatement), the evening walks would have often been longer in an effort to release some of the energy. This had also been beneficial for me. 45 minute evening walks = exercise for me every day.
All this changed over the last few weeks, though. Regardless of how nice the weather is, I’ve gotten into a horrible routine of opening the back door and standing on the deck while she did what she had to do. My 45 minute evening walks have turned into me literally standing in one spot…definitely a huge step backwards in my activity level.
It didn’t take long for me to notice the change in routine. I started feeling lathargic in the evenings and we even received a few comments that Sophie has been getting bigger (a nicer way of saying she’s filling out). While she’s still active in the back yard, it’s definitely a different level of activity.
All this being said, I can safely say that the light bulb has gone off, I can see the light, and have snapped out of the laziness. I have made what I’m calling a summer resolution to get back to our old routine. We’ll resume our evening walks and enjoy the beautiful weather before it’s gone!
Do you have trouble sticking to routine in the summer? How do you snap out of it?
